2023년 지나온 131을 돌아보며
B.I : 우린 늘 옹기종기 붙어서 가족같이 서로를 밀어주고 끌어주고 여기까지 왔던 것 같아요. 부족한게 많았고 보완할게 많았겠지만 일단은 고생을 정말 많이 했어요.
A : 말할 수 없는 수많은 어려움, 고난이 있었죠. 우선 일의 양이나 우리의 욕심, 꿈에 비해 사람이 없어서 일당백을 해야했어요. 퇴근 출근이랄 게 없이 작은 사무실에서 살다시피 했으니 (사무실에 라꾸라꾸도 있었음). 근데 모두 자발적이었다는 게 감동이고 비전이었던 것 같아요. 더 좋은 제작물이 나오게 하려고, 밖에서 조금이라도 우릴 알아달라고 정말 치열하게 달려왔어요.
B.I : 그렇기에 다들 나름의 꿈을 가지고 그 꿈을 실현 할 수 있는 곳이었으면 좋겠어요. 젊고 창의적인 사람들이 꿈을 펼치길 바랐고, 그게 우리의 비하인드이자 레이블 뜻이 되길 바란거죠..
B : 그래서 131의 메인 테마가 B-CUT이 됐어요. 대중에게 보여주는 건 최종 선별된 A컷이지만 그 뒤에 숨겨진 수 많은 B컷들, 우리가 모인 곳.
C : 131 라이프는 어렵지만 그 반대로 재밌기도 해요. 늘 함께거든요. 틀에 박히지 않으려고 부단히 노력해요. 사실 우리 상황이 녹록치 않았거든요. 생각보다 더 많이요. 늘 함께, 다같이 문제를 풀기 위해서 노력했던 거 같아요. 머리를 맞댄다는 거 그 자체였어요.
D : 손을 맞대서 가내 수공업으로 한 일도 많아요. 시간이 촉박해서 외부에서 인력을 구한다는 생각 조차 못하고 우리가 직접 뛰어들었던 적들이 많아요. 1기 아이디 분들에게 줄 선물도 다 팀원들이 함께 패킹 했어요. 물론 한빈씨도 함께. 혹시 포토카드 누락 될 까봐 여러 번 확인하고 기왕 하는 거 팬분들한테 예쁜 상태로 드리고 싶어서 상자 접을 때도 꼼꼼히 보고. 할 때는 힘든데 또 막상 좋아하시는 거 보면 뿌듯해요.
E : 아티스트가 진심이고 최선을 다하기 때문에 함께 하는 팀원들도 더 열심히 하게 되는 게 맞는 것 같아요. 해외 매체들이랑 영어로 인터뷰 하다 보면 대체로 비아이가 스스로 대답을 하는 편이지만, 가끔 딥한 이야기를 할 땐 통역으로 저희가 나설 때도 종종 있어요. 그럴 때 그 내용이 너무 좋아서 제가 영어로 통역 하면서도 혼자 속으로 감탄을 하는 경우가 많았어요. 여러 인터뷰를 통역해주는 과정에서, 그를 빠르게 이해하고 공감하고 또 존경할 수 있게 됐어요.
F : 함께 하는 사람이 나한테 진심을 주고, 믿는 게 느껴지는데 똑같이 자기 진심을 주고 싶은 게 당연한 것 같아요. 그런 마음이 모여서 ‘해내야한다’가 ‘해내야겠다’가 되고, 그게 131의 원동력이 되고.
G: 제작자는 자신의 아티스트를 의심하면 안된다고 생각해요. 뭔가 안 풀리는건 안 되는게 아니라 가다가 잠시 막힌 거거든요. 그 부분을 함께 해결하고 풀어가는 과정을 아티스트 홀로 감당하면 너무도 고되고 슬퍼진다고 생각해요. 함께 고민해줘야해요.
가장 기억에 남는 일은?
B.I : 1집이 아무래도 저한테는 의미가 가장 클 수 밖에 없어요. 제작의 모든 과정, 특히 뮤비.
A : 지금도 모든 제작물 하나 하나, 공연 하나 하나가 의미가 남달라요. 아무래도 131은 코로나 때 처음 팀원들이 모인 곳이다 보니까 세상에서 고립된 상태에서 시작한 거였거든요. WATERFALL 때, 인트로 필름 최종본이 정리되고 공개되는 날까지도 수십 번 본 거 같아요. 그리고 비디오가 공개되는 날은 정말 짜릿했어요. 비디오 시작이 비아이가 터널 밖으로 나가는 장면이에요. 꼭 그게 우리 모두가 세상 밖으로 한 걸음 내딛는 느낌이었거든요.
B : 대부분의 오프라인 공연이 하나 하나 기억에 크게 남아요. 의미도 깊고요. 코로나가 끝나고 처음 진행한 팬미팅 투어, 또 처음 한 WET 풀 파티 스케줄은 일반 관객들도 많았는데, 반응도 좋았고 또 공연 관계자 분들도 피드백이 너무 좋았어요.
C : WET은 혹시 노출이 있어서 특히 더 좋으셨나요 ㅎㅎ
B : 네ㅎㅎ멋졌어요.
C : 원래 한빈씨가 뮤비 찍고 나서 절대 이후에 노출 안 할 거라고 했는데, B의 강력한 건의로 콘서트 앞두고 다시 급하게 운동을 열심히 했었죠. 덕분입니다.
D : Keep me up 뮤비 때 원테이크 촬영한 거도 기억에 많이 남아요. 촬영 종료 예상 시간보다 20분 정도 빨리 끝나서, 누군가 갑자기 원테이크 촬영 한 번 해보는게 어떠냐고 제안 했어요. 원테이크는 사전에 한 번도 안 맞춰본 상태였거든요. 시간도 얼마 없어서 좀 많이 도전?이었는데 다들 파이팅 넘치게 한 번 해보겠다고 해서 촬영을 진행했어요. 딱 1번 밖에 촬영할 시간이 없었어서, 모든 스태프들이 꼭 성공하길 빌면서 숨죽여서 바라봤죠. 3분 25초 간 촬영을 하고 다같이 기립박수 했던 기억이 나요. 모든 스태프들은 환호성을 질렀는데, 한빈씨랑 댄서분들은 그대로 바닥에 뻗었어요.
C : BTBT, Keep me up이 퍼포먼스를 내세우는 곡이다 보니까 좀 더 현장 열기를 느낄 수 있는 기회들이 많았던 거 같아요. 코로나 이후기도 했고.
F : 도원에서 한 BTBT 게릴라 쇼케이스도 정말 멋졌어요. 공연 자체도 멋있었지만, 공연을 하기 까지도 정말 스펙타클 한 과정이었어요. 오프라인 공연을 꼭 해야겠다고 마음을 먹었는데, 막상 퍼포먼스를 보여줄 수 있는 오픈 스테이지가 많지 않았거든요. 희망하는 공연 일정은 다가오고, 진짜 마음이 급해서 여기저기 연락을 돌리다가 피치스 내부에 입점해 있는 도넛 가게에 전화도 했었어요. 지금은 지난 일이니까 추억이지만, 그때는 정말 여기저기 연락을 돌렸었어요
G : 하지만 아무래도 가장 기억에 남는 공연은 단독 콘서트예요. 애초에 하루에 팬미팅과 콘서트 2개를 모두 하는 것도 처음이었고, 131에서 하는 제대로 된 콘서트도 처음이었거든요. 조명이 켜진 이후의 퍼포먼스는 아티스트가 끌고 가는 거지만, 그 순간이 있기 까지의 모든 건 팀원들이 책임지는 거잖아요. 잠도 못 잤어요. 뭔가 우리가 못해서 지는 기분이 드는 건 싫거든요.
H : 몇 달을 숙직하듯 일하며 힘들게 콘서트를 준비했는데, 코스모스 앵콜 무대 때 팬분들이 떼창하는 모습을 보고 지난 순간들이 보상받는 느낌이었어요. 아, 이걸 위해서 이렇게까지 달렸지 라는 생각이 들었어요. 사실 아이디의 환호는 아티스트 뿐만 아니라 스테이지 너머의 우리한테도 엄청 큰 감동을 줘요.
131 첫 인상은?
REDDY : 속이 시끄럽던 때에 131을 만났고 따듯하고 반갑게 맞아 주셔서 너무 감사했어요. 올해 더 재밌는 이야기들을 함께 만들어 가길 간절히 간절히 원하고 있습니다. 믿어 주시는 만큼 저도 믿을 테니 멋진 이야기를 만들어 가고 싶은 마음 뿐이에요.
A : 이직하고 얼마 안 됐을 때 출근을 했는데, 갑자기 강아지가 뛰어들어와 안겼어요. 131 인턴 우유라고 소개해줬어요. 평생 직장으로 다녀야겠다고 다짐했어요.
B : 131에 처음 들어왔을 때 되게 바쁘게 돌아가는 사무실이었어요. 근데 다같이 웃음꽃이 피면서 일하는 모습에 반했던 것 같아요. 그 전까지만 해도 저는 일만 하는 로봇처럼 일해왔어서 이렇게 자연스러운 분위기가 회사에서 느낄 수 있을 거라는 생각을 못했거든요. 이제는 131 오고 시간이 좀 지났는데, 항상 따듯한 장작 주변에 계속 앉아서 일하고 있는 느낌이에요.

2023 and Reflections on 131
B.I: We’ve always been a close-knit family, coming this far together by helping and supporting each other consistently. I’m sure there may been things we could’ve improved on, but above all, we’ve done a good job.
A: It’s been quite a difficult journey. Firstly, each one of us wore many, many hats in the company because compared to the amount of workload and our level of ambition, we just didn’t have enough manpower. There really was no concept of getting off work, since we basically spent days and weeks in our tiny office. We even have foldable beds here. But what’s beautiful about it is that all of us were simply motivated by our vision. Nobody was forcing us to do anything. We all gave our best shot so that we can create better and hopefully gain some recognition for our work.
B.I: I want this place to be a sphere where everyone can realize their dreams. It is my hope that young creatives can chase after their ambitious goals, and this is the very idea that our label is built on.
B: Hence why the main theme of 131 is called B-CUT. What we exhibit in public are always the finalized A cuts, but the truth is, behind the stage is where the B-CUTS live and where we gather.
C: Life at 131 is tough but it’s also very fun. We’re always together. We give our best not to be constrained in a box. Our situation, to be honest, was not very ideal. Worse than you can imagine. And so, we had spent endless hours together tackling problems. We really put our heads together to rise above.
D: There have been many times when we literally took matters into our own hands. In moments when we were running out of time and unable to seek resource elsewhere, we had to jump in ourselves right away. It was us who hand-packed all of the special gifts for our 1st generation ID’s. That includes Hanbin too. We double-checked and triple-checked the packages really carefully to make them look the most presentable or in case anything was missing. Though it was not an easy process, we felt really proud and glad to see the fans’ positive reactions.
E: We as teammates really feel in our hearts a genuine passion from the artist, and that in turn, becomes our motivation to work harder. There are times when I translate for B.I during his English interviews with the foreign press, although he is able to communicate on his own most of the time. As I translate for him, it’s not uncommon for me to feel moved and inspired by his profound answers. In moments like that, I learn from him, empathize with him, and grow respect for him.
F: When someone you’re with shows you sincerity and places their faith in you, it’s only natural to want to reciprocate the same energy. That is exactly what shapes our mindset at work from “I have to do it,” to “I will do it,” which then becomes the driving force behind 131.
G: A producer should never doubt their artist. When things aren’t going well, it does not mean we’ve hit the wall, but just temporarily stuck. It’s very sad and tragic for the artist to be left alone in the rut when that happens. Instead, you must become a team and weather the storm together.
The Most Memorable Moment at 131?
B.I: My first album is certainly the most meaningful for me. I mean the whole production process, especially the music video.
A: Even now, every creation and every concert hits us differently. 131 was first launched during COVID which means we started out in isolation from the outside world. During WATERFALL, I re-watched the final version of the intro film endlessly until the moment of its release. The day it became public, it was truly electrifying. In the beginning of the video, B.I exits a tunnel to step outside. That surely felt like a metaphor for all of us in our team, taking our very first step out to the world.
B: Nearly all of the moments from our offline concerts are unforgettable. Very meaningful, too. The first fan meeting tour after the pandemic, and also WET, our very first pool party performance, received many high praises and positive feedback from the audience and the event staff.
C: Did you particularly like WET for the revealing clothes?
B: Yes, it was wonderful.
C: Hanbin actually once declared he would never show his bare skin again after shooting a music video, but all thanks to B’s strong advice, he went back to the gym quite intensely.
D: I remember really vividly when we shot KEEP ME UP in one take. On the day of, we finished shooting 20 minutes early and out of nowhere, someone suggested the brilliant idea of taking a one-take shot. It wasn’t like we practiced for it beforehand. Due to the time given, it was surely a risky challenge to take on, but we decided we’d soldier on and give it a go. All of the staff nervously watched hoping for the best, as we all knew we only had one shot. The moment the shooting ended at 3 minutes and 25 seconds, every single person on site stood up to give a standing ovation. As everyone applauded, Hanbin and the dancers, on the other hand, collapsed straight to the ground.
C: As BTBT and KEEP ME UP are performance-focused tracks, we really enjoyed the opportunities to feel the level of energy and excitement on site. Especially given the fact that it was right after the pandemic.
F: The BTBT guerilla performance with Peaches was also mesmerizing. I mean not only the concert itself but the dramatic process it took to get there. While we were dead set on holding an offline concert, we just couldn’t find many venues with an open stage for performance. We even called a donut shop in the Peaches building as the date of the concert fast approached. We look back now with a smile, but at the time we were frantically making calls everywhere.
G: But above all, the most unforgettable memory has to be the solo concert. Not only was it our first time ever holding a fan meeting and a concert all in one day, but it was also 131’s very first proper concert. It’s on the artist to carry his performances and do his thing once the lights come on, but up till that very moment, it’s all up to the teammates behind the stage. None of us slept. Falling short and failing were the last thing we wanted to do.
H: All of the days and nights we spent for months paid off the moment we heard the fans’ shouting for encore after the COSMOS performance. I thought to myself, ‘wow, this is what I worked this hard for.’ The fact is, not only the artist, but also all of us beyond the stage are really touched by the cheers and shouts from ID’s.
First Impression of 131?
REDDY: I was going through some stuff when I first met 131, so I was very grateful for the warmth and generosity they showed me. It is my eager hope that we will be bringing forth some exciting stories together this year. I have strong faith in the company as much as they do in me, so I’m looking forward to creating some wonderful things in the future.
A: Just a few days after I entered 131, I was jumped by an adorable dog as soon as I walked into the office. I was told his name is Ooyoo (Milk in Korean) and that he is the office intern. That’s when I knew I’d be staying here for good.
B: It was very hectic around here when I first joined 131, yet I think I fell in love with the way everyone was always laughing and having a great time at the office. In the past, I had only worked in stern and inflexible environment where everyone worked like a group of robots. It’s been a while now since I started working at 131, but every day feels like sitting by a warm fireplace.
